Great location, great rooms, excellent restaurant

Comfort Suites Golden West on Evergreen Parkway

We have stayed here multiple times on trips between LA area and Chicago area. We have always had an excellent experience. The rooms are clean and quiet, the lobby area is pleasant and cozy, and there is an excellent restaurant right next door, the historic El Rancho. Highly recommended.

Dog-friendly, but....

Coronado Motor Hotel a Travelodge by Wyndham

This is an old motor hotel, dating back before World War II, and it shows. Owners have done a good job restoring and refreshing the rooms, but they are still old and not particularly charming.

The restaurant associated with the hotel has nothing to cheer about. I ordered a steak, which was almost inedibly tough. In the next room they had a karaoke contest going with the worst, most out-of-tune singers you have ever heard at a karaoke mike. TV in the dining room was playing braying jackass political commentators, which did nothing for my appetite.

As for dogs, there's plenty of space to walk your dog, but it is all covered with asphalt. IF your dog prefers grass, as ours does, you must walk a block south to the Yuma County Historical Library.

I really wanted to like this place, but I can't justify a high rating. Room OK, restaurant not.

Good hotel, good with dogs

La Quinta by Wyndham Amarillo Airport

This is one of the nicer motels we have stayed at with bookings through BringFido. If you have a dog, ask for a room on the first floor. These rooms have easy access to the great outdoors, and a bonus of 12-foot ceilings, which makes them feel really spacious and elegant. The staff is friendly to dogs. Plenty of grass outside for dog walking.

Amazing hotel, amazing bargain

Hotel Encanto de Las Cruces

This hotel may cost a few $$ more than other places, but it is more than worth it. It is really a resort, not a "hotel," with a spa where you can get a massage, an outstanding New Mexico cuisine restaurant where both dinner and breakfast are amazing, super-friendly staff who love dogs, marvelous regional decor. Locally owned, and a portion of profits from the hotel go to maintaining New Mexico heritage. You can even dine with your dog if you chose one of the tables in the lobby, just outside the main restaurant area. Waitress brought a napkin for my dog, and a hotel staffer reached into her pocket and pulled out d milk bone for him (but asked if it was OK before giving it to him). Only downside is that grassy area for dog walks is fairly small and mostly on a steep slope. I would give this hotel 6 bones if I could.

Unless you hate New Mexico cuisine, the breakfast will be by far the best you find on your journey, I guarantee you. 10,000 times better than typical buffet breakfast at motels. Dinner was also outstanding, and they offer a wide range of excellent margaritas. (Menu doesn't show the price; they are all $10.)

Highly, highly recommended.

The BEST!

La Posada Lodge & Casitas Ascend Hotel Collection

La Posada Lodge is the best hotel I've found on BringFido. It is a great place to spend a night with your pet dogif you are traveling through Tucson.

The facility is far more elegant than your typical roadside motel. The rooms are pleasant and comfortable. The lobby is spacious and well decorated in a Southwest theme. There are numerous up-scale amenities. The "ground floor" (which is actually the 'second floor" since the "first floor" opens out onto a lower veranda area) has lots of grass available for dog walking. (You could probably venture onto the adjacent 18-hole golf course if you wished.)

The hotel has an excellent restaurant on premises, the Gringo, which is decorated with a lot of fun southwest-themed art. The menu us varied and interesting, and they have an interesting assortment of wines available, including a really nice Chardonnay from Baja California. (Really!). The food is excellent. The breakfast buffet is a lot better than what you typically see in a freeway-adjacent motel, because the food is actually cooked on premises rather than being prepared in a factory somewhere and warmed on-site.

La Posada is not right on the I-10 freeway, but it is more than worth the few minutes' drive from a freeway exit to get there.

I will plan future trips through the Southwest so that I can have another opportunity to stay here. Absolutely first-rate. Excellent quality and an excellent value.

Overpriced and....no coffee at breakfast, no apologies

La Quinta by Wyndham Carlsbad

Let's stipulate that $460 is an obscene rate for a motel room, but that's what the market seems to demand in Carlsbad NM, because of its proximity to Carlsbad Caverns and an apparent lack of sufficient hotel rooms.

No matter what the price, when you check into a La Quinta you expect good service. We didn't get it. When I went down for breakfast at 6:30 a.m., there was no coffee in any of the four large thermos containers in the breakfast buffet line. I couldn't find anyone in the kitchen so I went to the front desk, where the guy blew me off and told me to go find the kitchen person myself. Then a woman showed up and said, "well, there is coffee up by the front door." As if that make it OK. I asked to speak to the manager. He came around and was pretty defensive. He said he wanted to "make it right" by offering me a free membership in the LaQuinta discount program and giving me some free points on it. Since I don't stay at LaQuinta very often, that was not a very appealing offer. He finally offered to give me a discount on the room rate.

What irked me that most is that at no point in the process did any of these three employees of the hotel actually apologize and say, "we're sorry we messed up and didn't have coffee available," or anything close to a real apology.

After we got in the car and headed down the road to the Caverns, my wife said that she had been awake since 4 a.m. because the guy in the room above us was stomping around, and there was very little or no sound insulation in the flooring.

They do accept dogs here, I should note.

We won't be staying here again.
