Fort Frederica National Monument Fort Frederica National Monument is pet-friendly. Once a thriving British town and fort founded in 1736 by General James Edward Oglethorpe, this pet-friendly structure was designed to defend the northern colonies against Spanish attack. Dogs must be leashed, well-behaved and cleaned up after. There are dog waste bag stations at the entrance to the historic area, and at the dinghy dock, plus water fountains for dogs and people on the breezeway porch of the visitor center.
