Pet Friendly St. James Creek Preserve in Saint James City, FL
This dog-friendly preserve is 118 acres in size and has pine flatwoods and mangrove forest plant communities. It has had an active bald eagle nest for over 20 years. It is open to the public, but we ask that during eagle nesting season (between October 1st thru May 15th) that you do not hike past the Eagle Nest Observation Platform or make any loud noises so as not to disturb the nesting eagles, which are protected under state and federal law. Programs are offered twice a year in the fall and spring to allow visitors to learn about the preserve. Check our guided walks schedule at Leeparks.org for dates. This preserve is located on Pine Island north of St. James City. The trailhead is along Castile Rd. just off Stringfellow Rd.
Pet Friendly Gulfside Beach (aka Algiers Beach) in Sanibel, FL
One of the many pet-friendly beaches of Sanibel Island, Gulfside Beach (or Algiers Beach) makes a great escape for you and Fido. A portion of the beach is located near a City of Sanibel and Federal nature preserve. Algiers beach is also home to threatened and endangered nesting shorebirds and sea turtles during much of the year. Dogs must be kept on a leash (maximum 8 feet) at all times, and owners are required by law to clean up after their pets. There are picnic tables, wash stations, and restrooms available, and an hourly parking fee is charged between the hours of 7 am to 7 pm (free after 7 pm).
Pet Friendly Bonita Beach Dog Park in Fort Myers Beach, FL
Dog Beach is a strip of beach land on the outside edge of Lover's Key State Park along the Fort Myers/Bonita Springs line. It’s an off leash beach to let your dog run free and frolic in the shallow, calm water of the Gulf of Mexico. There are no fences, leashes or worries. Just plenty of dogs of all sizes to play with. Many visit that don't even have dogs, but enjoy watching them run and play with their furry friends on land and water. You can't see if from the main road, but follow the signs around the trees and a clearing will open up to Dog Beach. During high tide you may have to wade through some water to get to it so be prepared. There is a portable toilet, and no running water so remember to bring some for your pet.
