Beautiful beach with easy access and open space for dogs off leash

Alder Lane Beach Access

Although we chose a fairly chilly day, we thoroughly enjoyed beautiful Hilton head and this beach in particular. We parked in the free parking at the beginning of the road, about a 14 minute walk and strolled to the entrance over by the Marriott resort. The walk was nice but it is a bike path so you do have to give away a lot to bicycles. There are plastic walkways down to the beach which make getting across the soft sand super easy and the rest of the sand is hard and compacted. Because it was off-season, the dogs were allowed off leash and they ran and played to their hearts content. Be sure to pay attention to the special directions on finding the beach because it is a bit tricky and also to the hours and dates that the dogs can be on the beach

Very disappointing

Iris Garden Inn

Although we were originally booked for two nights at this hotel, we ended up leaving early and foregoing our paid reservation. The hotel is in an industrial area and the grounds are not dog friendly at all. Walking the dogs in the evening or the morning feels very sketchy at best. Front desk staff was not courteous and did not have any treats or special welcome for the pets . Their friendliness did not extend to humans either as when my husband went to get water they would not even charge it to the room but insisted he pay cash. All this for over $350 per night! Granted we chose a bad weekend due to Saint Patrick’s Day weekend, but there still should be consistency. The walls are paper thin and we could hear the drunk neighbor well into the night. Definitely not one to recommend for people who want to enjoy quiet and safety for their pets

A true dog friendly hotel

Southern Oaks Inn

We spent One night in this hotel with our two dogs, a 90 pound Doberman and a 60 pound mixed breed. Checking in was a pleasure especially because they had two big jars of treats for the dogs to enjoy. Front desk staff was friendly and informative. The hotel features a small fenced in play yard which came in handy for exercising the dogs. Breakfast was included and we had an outdoor area to sit at with the dogs while we ate. It worked out well because it was nice weather but I can see how if it was raining this might be a problem especially because the door to the patio was an exit only and you had to walk back around to the lobby to go back into the dining area. Overall I would recommend this as a dog friendly place
