Leashed dogs are welcome at the wonderful dog-friendly Kiva Beach in South Lake Tahoe. East of Tallac Point, dogs are permitted on a leash (an El Dorado Country ordinance). Dogs are not permitted on the federally protected wetlands west of Tallac Point (where the Lake of the Sky trail concludes).This is for the protection of wildlife in this fragile ecosystem.

Dogs are not allowed in the visitor center, on the half-mile Nature Trail, or China Cove Beach, nor can they be on designated ski trails when snow is present.

Fido is welcome to join you in this state park but must be on a leash at all times. You can wander around the old buildings and think about William Bodey, who discovered small amounts of gold in the hills north of Mono Lake, and who the town was named after. Dogs are not allowed on the Stamp Mill tour or in the Museum and you should clean up any mess they make while on site. The park is open in the summer, April 1st to October 31st, from 9am to 6pm; and in the winter, November 1st to March 31st, from 9am to 4pm.

Yosemite Mountain Sugar Pine Railroad is a pet-friendly steam train that used to haul logs from the forests of Central California. Nowadays, it hauls dogs on a one-hour scenic ride around the tree-line mountains of Fish Camp. This paved trailhead in Yosemite National Park includes a lovely loop from the car park at Yosemite Valley east towards Camp Curry and onto Mirror Lake. Leashed pets, bicycles, and strollers are allowed on the first paved mile of the trail. Parking can be found at Curry Village.

Calaveras Big Trees State Park is a dog-friendly destination in Arnold, CA. Although pups are not allowed on the designated trails or in the woods, there are several miles of fire roads that are pet friendly. Fido can also join you in developed areas like picnic sites, campgrounds and paved roads. While someone stays with your pup at the campground, make sure you check out the "Discovery Tree," also known as the "Big Stump," the first Sierra redwood noted by Augustus T. Dowd in 1852.

Bishop Dog Park, located in Bishop, CA, welcomes Fido to run, play and socialize off-leash. The park has grass, benches, & shade structures, in addition to two separate fully-fenced areas for large and small dogs. All dogs must be licensed and currently vaccinated. Owners are asked to please pick up after their pets.

Take a fascinating 35-minute ride back into history over the scenic Virginia & Truckee Railroad in Virginia City, NV. Leashed and well-behaved dogs are welcome with permission from the conductor. The ride includes narrated stories of the Comstock Bonanza, the railroad's history, and how Virginia City used to be the richest city in the world. You'll pass 17 Bonanza mine sites and silver ore veins, and make a stop at Gold Hill where gold and silver strikes began in 1859. The train operates on weekends during the season from late May until October. Permission from conductor is required to bring Fido along.

Marshall discovered gold in 1848 on the South Fork of the American River; an event which led to the greatest mass movement of people in the Western Hemisphere. Shining flecks of gold were uncovered in a tailrace of the sawmill he was building in partnership with John Sutter. Visit this popular attraction to see a replica of the original sawmill. Those exploring the area with Fido can enjoy hikes and a picnic in the oak woodlands. Overlooking the beautiful river canyon is the Marshall Monument, California's first historic monument and the final resting place of James Marshall. The statue looks down on the river and points to the site of the gold discovery.
