Can I Bring My Dog on JetBlue?

Posted by Lauren Barker

JetBlue is one of the U.S.’s leading low-cost airlines, with more than 1,000 daily flights to destinations throughout the U.S., Canada, Mexico, the Caribbean, Central America, South America and Europe. The airline welcomes four-legged passengers to fly in the cabin on a number of flights.

If you’re planning to fly with your pet on JetBlue, here are some very important up-to-date policies you’ll need to know. Being prepared and knowing what to expect can help you and Fido have a seamless journey.

The Booking Process

Pets traveling on JetBlue can be booked online, through the mobile app or over the phone. When you’re booking your flight, the pet fee of $125 each way can be added in the Extras section. Once you’ve booked your flight, call the JetBlue customer service line at 800-JETBLUE to confirm your pet. The airline representative will ask for your pet’s name, breed and weight. TrueBlue members earn 300 extra points per segment for adding a pet to their booking.

Only six pets are allowed in the cabin on board JetBlue flights, so be sure to book your travel as early as possible to guarantee your furry friend a spot. A maximum of two pets per traveler is allowed, each in their own carrier. In order to bring a second pet, a second seat and pet fee must be paid. Pets are not permitted in Mint, JetBlue’s premium cabin.

Pet vaccination, documentation and entry requirements vary, so be sure to check the requirements for each destination on your itinerary well in advance. Pets are not accepted on flights to Trinidad & Tobago and to or from the U.K./Europe.

Carrier

Pets must be able to stand up, turn around and lie down in a natural position in their kennels (without touching any side or the top of the container). Carriers must meet a few requirements:

  • Non-collapsible carriers can’t exceed the under-seat dimensions of any aircraft included in your journey.

  • Soft-sided collapsible carriers can be slightly larger but still need to fit under the seat without having to excessively collapse the carrier. They also have to be secure, padded, made of water-repellant material and have nylon mesh ventilation on two or more sides.

  • Carrier dimensions should be no larger than 17" (L) x 12.5" (W) x 8.5" (H). A JetBlue-approved carrier can be purchased online.

During taxi, takeoff and landing, your pet must remain inside the carrier under the seat in front of you. During the rest of the flight, you may hold the carrier on your lap. If you purchased an additional seat for your pet, you may place the carrier on that seat once you are in the air.

Check-In

Since you’ve already paid the pet fee, you can check in 24 hours before your flight online, on the JetBlue app or at an airport kiosk. Plan to reach the airport early, allowing enough time to check luggage and find a pet relief area. If you’re traveling with a pet stroller, it can be checked for no charge at the ticket counter. Or, you may gate-check it either to the arrival gate or bag carousel at your destination.

During the check-in process, you may be asked to show your pet's vaccination or travel documentation. Save time and stress at the airport by creating your pet profile on BringFido’s website or mobile app for iOS or Android. You can upload your pup’s health records for one-touch access whenever you need them.

Once you’re checked in, stop by a full-service JetBlue counter to obtain your special JetPaws® bag tag, which will be attached to your pet’s carrier.

When you reach the security checkpoint, you will need to take your pet out of its carrier. Your pet must remain in the carrier in the airport apart from at the security checkpoint and designated relief areas. Pets are allowed in the TSA Pre-Check line with approved travelers.

JetBlue’s Pet Policy

Pets can travel in a carrier in the cabin on JetBlue flights, but they are not permitted in Mint, JetBlue’s premium cabin. With the exception of service animals, only cats and dogs are allowed on board. Pets must fit comfortably in a carrier with dimensions no greater than 17" (L) x 12.5" (W) x 8.5" (H) and the carrier must stay under the seat in front of you during taxiing, takeoff and landing. A maximum of two pets per traveler is allowed, each in their own carrier. In order to bring a second pet, a second seat and pet fee must be paid. An additional fee of $125 per pet, per flight is charged at the time of booking.

Carry-On Pets

Small pets are welcome to fly with you in the cabin on JetBlue if they are at least eight weeks old when traveling within the U.S. and Puerto Rico, and at least 16 weeks old when traveling into the U.S. from abroad. Only two pets are permitted per passenger, and they must be in separate carriers. If traveling with a second pet, a second seat and pet fee must be paid. The fee for carrying a pet in the cabin is $125 each way. There is no charge for service animals.

During taxi, takeoff, and landing, your pet must remain inside the carrier under the seat in front of you. During the rest of the flight, you may hold the carrier on your lap. If you purchased an additional seat for your pet, you may place the carrier on that seat while in the air.

Pets are not permitted in cargo or as checked baggage on JetBlue flights.

Pertaining to all airlines, the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has issued a temporary suspension of dogs (carry-on or checked), including fully trained service dogs, traveling to the U.S. from a country considered high-risk for dog rabies.
