Reviews
Travelers found the La Quinta by Wyndham Charleston Riverview hotel to have a convenient location by the marina, though the rooms were dated and maintenance issues were common. Some guests praised the hotel's pet-friendliness, while others were disappointed by the lack of pet-friendly amenities and the small outdoor areas. Overall, reviews were mixed, with opinions divided on the hotel's cleanliness, noise levels, and value.

- MirandaMay 21, 2024Not great
While BringFido provided an exceptionally easy platform to find & book a dog-friendly hotel room, the hotel itself wasn't great. I'll start with the good. The check-in process was quick and easy, but upon entering our room, it wasn't very clean. The bedroom floor was dirty and the shower was really discolored. But we were only staying one night so we didn't make a fuss. When we went to bed we also noticed about a one-inch gap under the front door and a 1/4" gap on the side of the door. This let in a ton of light and noise into our room and this made our dog extremely anxious all night which meant we all barely slept.
Now, where things went wrong was the next morning. About half a dozen cars were broken into in the hotel parking lot overnight (including ours) and the front desk staff were not compassionate at all. The maintenance guy was however extremely helpful. NOTE: there are NO cameras in the back of the hotel which is where the car windows were smashed. The Charleston Police responded quickly but from a hotel standpoint, we were very disappointed in their reaction at all. That said, this is the second bad experience I have had a La Quinta and will not be staying at one again.
- VanessaMay 5, 2024My Fur Babies Were Stars
The room was great but the bathroom needs some work. The HOT breakfast was chaos and not worth the trouble. BUT the dog friendliness from the staff and guests was amazing! My 2 dogs were the stars of the show with everyone. They were allowed to be anywhere in the hotel and marina! I do recommend an upgrade on the bathrooms and when the hotel knows in advance your fur babies will be there, maybe have food and water bowls and maybe a bed or blanket in the room for their comfort.
- JackieApr 15, 2024Nice location average room
Bed was saggy and floor creaked but for the price it wasn’t bad.
- KarenMar 28, 2024Nice stay
Great location. 1st floor access to make it easy to take dog out. Both my dog and myself were made to feel welcome!
- JulieMar 27, 2024Satisfying
Good location, modest, but satisfying as good price and close to downtown Charleston.
- LisaJan 2, 2024Great across the board!
Staff was friendly and welcoming to us and our dog. Rooms were very comfortable and clean. Although first giving a room inside, I requested one with exterior access to make it easy to take our dog out late night/early am. Staff graciously changed our room. Breakfast includes make your own waffles, which were delicious! Beautiful location right across from the marina. California Delight restaurant is a short walk and delicious for dinner. Highly recommend La Quinta.
- SteveNov 4, 2023Stay away
Dirty, beat up, noisy. Very unfriendly front desk. Nothing within walking distance for food. Paid parking.
- AmyOct 30, 2023Had no problems with our stay
I am giving 5 bones due to our stay was great. Staff was friendly when we addressed them for questions or needed anything extra for our room. We took our boxer with us and she was welcomed by staff and other customers every time we took her out of the room. We mostly took her with us everywhere we went outside the hotel, except one day. We left her in the room and she just laid on the bed with the TV on for background noise.
Our pros on staying. The room was clean we stayed in the main building. The free breakfast was decent. It is just some bakery stuff, bread you can make toast, eggs, cereal, you can also make fresh waffles. Also had juice and milk. Nothing real fancy, just enough to tide you over til lunch. Once again staff was friendly as well. Bed was comfortable along with the pillows. Also great location to downtown or to Folly Beach. Does not take long to get to either!
Downfalls we had. Other guests slamming their doors shut when leaving or entering their rooms late at night or super early in the morning. Also the hotel could be really updated to be honest, but really it could have been a lot worse really. I recommend staying here if you are not going to take your pet with you to Folly Beach or down town, due to if something was to happen and they contacted you, you would be super close to get back asap.
- JhvonneOct 1, 2023Nice location
Overall good stay! We did ask for first floor originally and we were put on 4th. But it worked out alright except it took longer to go out. I never really found the "pet friendly area" for waste but all worked out ok. Would recommend. No perks but no issues.
- AnastasiaSep 20, 2023Rude staff
We arrived at the hotel after a long 10 hour drive. My requests for a room with a fridge was not honored. I had raw dog food and my food with me. Ice machine was broken in that building, front desk was not accommodating. I had to give her my food to put in their fridge. It was frustrating after a 10 hour drive alone. Not sure I’ll stay here again, I was disappointed because my first time there a year prior was great. I recommend calling hotel after you book here to specify because they don’t read requests.
- MargaretJul 15, 2023Unique Location
The location is tucked conveniently off the highway on a tiny spit of land with a marina on one side and a marsh on the other. It was a nice place to walk. There is a good restaurant next door at the tip of the peninsula. The downside is the building is really tired. The staff was friendly, the room was clean, but the door to our room was almost rusted through at the bottom.
- KatherineJun 1, 2023Nice Stay
Comfortable and restful for both of us.
- JanetApr 11, 2023Stay away
Would not stay here again! Room decor was fine, bathrooms need upgrade. We got stuck on the 3rd floor of the additional run down building beside the main building. Ice machines on all floors were broken, but the worst part is we came home with bites on our arms!!!! Not from our dog either, she wasn’t even scratching! This was our last hotel on our 10 day trip down south and the only one I could not wait to leave! Looking back I wish we left early. I’d seriously try another hotel. The harbor is pretty, but that’s all it’s got going for them.
- PatriciaMar 14, 2023Neglected
Dirty. Not maintained.
- GeorgeFeb 27, 2023Very clean, excellent location
We will be back for sure.
- KayeFeb 27, 2023Nice location
What others said about easy things to fix is true. The lack of functional lamps added to the overall dingy feeling of our room, as did the mold in the corner of the bathroom and the non functioning light above the bathroom mirror. It was fun seeing the boats stored nearby. It wasn’t fun being on the third floor with my dog. You get what you pay for.
- SeanFeb 11, 2023Great location
Room was clean well stocked! The location was great! We met other friendly furry friends :)
- JennaJan 30, 2023Convenient set up
I liked the motel style where all the rooms in the building we were in were accessible from the outside. Would have liked a refrigerator in the room. Nice that you could leave well-behaved dogs in the room for a few minutes.
- TonyJan 27, 2023Terrible
This hotel has gone downhill fast. Rooms are dirty with dim lights. The tub stopper broken, the breakfast lacking with water downed orange juice, no fruit limited, bare bones with fake eggs, and generic brand cereal. They appear to be cutting all corners to minimize cost and overcharge guests with up charge fees such as excessive pet fees and room cleaning fees. Stay clear! Don’t give them your credit card as upcharges will be posted that are next to impossible to get removed!
- JohnJan 6, 2023Clean
Clean, close to 95, good value.
- MichaelJan 3, 2023Good location
Room was good but grassy area for dogs is small; no room to play.
- YayaoDec 3, 2022They have two buildings
If you lucky get the room in the new building everything will be nice, the old building is the one got one bone.
- JamesNov 13, 2022River Marina Hotel
Ok stay.
- BethNov 5, 2022Not bad, not great
Decent facility but very little area for pets.
- BriannaOct 29, 2022Wonderful experience
We were welcomed with smiling faces and the room was exactly as expected. The pet fees actually ended up being less than listed, which was an awesome surprise! We will definitely be back.
- MichaelOct 12, 2022Bad experience
We arrived at the hotel to discover it was in very poor condition. There was trash piled in the hallway, the place smelled bad, our bathtub was clogged. We promptly checked out in the morning and moved to a different hotel. The hotel staff also promised they would refund us (since we had paid for three nights), and they have so far not done so. I have stayed at many La Quintas over the years. This one was the only one I’ve ever had a problem with. Avoid at all costs.
- EvaAug 30, 2022Dogs accepted not embraced
The area is a bare minimum to comfortably walk your dog. Ok for a night's sleep while passing thru, that’s it.
- SueAug 26, 2022Adequate
Room was clean and bed was very comfortable. Plenty of space for our big dog! We knew we weren’t going to stay in an “exclusive” hotel and this met our needs to sleep for one night. The hotel building is a little tired but it’s old. Location pretty convenient. If I was to have one criticism it would be the absolutely terrible breakfast. Cool coffee, bread that was like cardboard, no bagels just sugary cereal choices and powdered scrambled eggs. Skip this and eat elsewhere!
- DeniseJul 22, 2022Nice place
This hotel is next to a marina which made it a nice place to walk Spike. The room was adequate for our over night stay and I appreciated the late checkout time. We spent the afternoon in downtime Charleston which was enjoyable and very pet friendly. Traffic in and out of the city is time consuming.
- AnthonyJul 8, 2022Treat dog owners bad
They had two buildings at this hotel. The main one was nice but the other one where they put us because we had a dog was terrible. Dirty, things in the room didn’t work ice machine was broke grounds around the building were terrible. I wouldn’t recommend this hotel to dog owners.
- LindaJun 30, 2022AWFUL HOTEL
Overpriced and rundown. Dirty carpets. Loose banister. Hole in the wall in the room. Had to stuff a towel in it and sleep with the lights on, afraid something could crawl out of it. I gave it a 1 bone for the location, which was a marina environment. Very pleasant outside. Too bad the hotel was such a dump!
- AprilJun 13, 2022Needs a REMODEL
Old facility. Condom packet found in bedside table.
- JulieJun 3, 2022Great hotel and great location
Beautiful and dog friendly.
- JanetJun 1, 2022Not what we expected
Not only wasn't "Fido" treated like anything, but neither were we. Totally ignored upon checking in and checking out. Staff didn't even lift their heads to say hello. The place was shabby and the elevator smelled old! The faucets and the drains in the bathroom were rusty and disgusting. The outdoor corridors were filthy and didn't look as though they had ever been swept or washed. The location was by a yacht club which was nice. Nothing else. Just awful!
- KennethMay 29, 2022Perfect
Great location, very helpful staff, clean room
- TinaMay 8, 2022Great dog-friendly hotel!
The room was very nice and the hotel staff was very welcoming to our pup.
- BarrieApr 28, 2022Not a good pet place
I was very disappointed with the room. Pet friendly should mean more than just allowing pets. Our cat got under the bed where there was garbage. Old straw, bag of chips and plastic spoon. Perfect cat toys! When I questioned the purpose of charging a pet fee and complained of the garbage, the woman at the reception station wearing a mask under her nose didn't apologize or even look at me. She handed me a receipt and that was it! Amazing that the hospitality staff isn't hospitable at all. Don't waste your money here!
- DavidApr 12, 2022Noisy and tiny room
Heard traffic noise most of the night. Not enough room for 2 dog cages to be set up in the room.
- GeorgeApr 1, 2022Great location
It was a short trip but it was a nice stay.
- NinaMar 31, 2022Great location
Beautiful view of the Marina. Walking distance to a restaurant that allows dogs on deck. Clean, friendly staff.
- ConstanceMar 30, 2022Great experience
Great location... a short walk to the beach. Charlie at the front desk went over and above to make our stay a positive experience. Dog areas and nicely landscaped. Highly recommend.
- Anne-MarieMar 29, 2022Clean and spacious room
More of a modern feel. Great simple style, clean and comfortable.
- PatriciaMar 26, 2022Great location
Close to city center and very nice staff.
- EdwardMar 7, 2022Good location
Clean room. Good for our poodle.
- LisaFeb 27, 2022Great stay with the dog
Location is wonderful for enjoying Charleston and the beautiful county parks. Our dog loved the dog park at James Island County Park, close to the hotel.
- ChristinaFeb 26, 2022La Quinta Inn & Suites Charleston Riverview
Clean, great location.
- NEDFeb 8, 2022Gorgeous Location
Located on the marina made for water view lovers.
- AmyFeb 7, 2022Great Location, but left much to be desired
I wanted to LOVE this place because it was pet friendly, and amazing price for Charleston, and a great location right on the Ashley River on a marina. Beautiful location, but right next to the road, so very loud. Many things made it extremely loud. Barely slept because the walls are extremely thin and in the room we were. in there was about an inch gap all around the main door so the hallway light also came in all night long. If your dog reacts to sounds in the night, he/she will hear everything that is going on in and outside of the hotel. This is the loudest hotel I have ever been in. The lighting was terrible in all parts of the room, but especially the bathroom. The light buzzed and was extremely bright. The room was clean, but very outdated, with some sort of water stains on the wood and marks on the floors and walls. The internet in the rooms is very very weak. I was expecting to be able to work from my room as I have an online job, but I had to go to the lobby where it is extremely loud for many many reasons.
That being said, the price is right (they do charge $10 per dog per night which isn't too bad), the location is perfect if want to be centrally located in Charleston. The breakfast is pretty typical of these types of hotels....I loved the waffle maker, sausage, eggs, and coffee. They didn't clean my room at all, but that might just be because of the dogs or Covid. When I asked about the wifi they said they would "check it out". If you are just passing through and need a quick place to stay, it is fine, but I wouldn't stay there any more than that if you are not a very very heavy sleeper and if your dogs are not startled by loud noises. Again, great price and location, but left much to be desired.
- DaveJan 23, 2022Disappointed
La Quinta has always been our go to motel chain because of their great dog policy. BUT this time we were disappointed. The location was nice and convenient. The room itself was clean. We had a three nite stay and at check-in that there would be no maid service because of covid. Ok, fine. They did have breakfast that was mostly inedible and was closed at 9:01 if you were finished or not. The room itself had no refrigerator, microwave or even a mirror at the dressing table. Definitely not our best La Quinta experience and far below what we have come to expect. We will continue to stay with La Quinta just never again at this Charleston location.
- FrankJan 23, 2022Great location, clean, updated room
Easy access to Charleston. Generally friendly staff. Clean, updated room with hard floors. We’ll go back.
- T.Dec 31, 2021Place needs to be upgraded
Only a sliver of land for your dog to do their business. Inside, the place was dirty, no toilet paper, towels w/ engrained dirt. Much of the staff looked stressed and not so friendly, which could be a by-product of the pandemic and busy holiday season.
- LoriNov 22, 2021Good Location, staff was very nice and welcoming
The La Quinta In & Suites was a good location. I thought that we would have at least a mini fridge in our room, and was disappointed, as we had our pup with us and some of his food requires refrigeration. I was also disappointed in the cleanliness. I am used to cleaner rooms, linens and bathrooms. Breakfast was ok, and most humans took advantage of it. It was packed, but quiet and most people were out during the day and quiet at night. The front desk was welcoming and informative. if we needed anything we called the front desk and they had it ready for us when we went to get it. Guests need to be proactive and that is understandable as most places are understaffed. Guests need to expect that due to the times. Each human was very responsible for their 4 legged friends and the rest of the guests were very friendly. Overall things wen well, and I would stay there again, without hesitation.
- ShondaNov 16, 2021Good Value
3.75 🦴
Cons: One of the elevators kept making weird sounds and freaked me out. The mirror, bottom of toilet and bathtub could have been better cleaned. I found coins in the floor and a can in the trash from a prior occupant. There was no bag in the can.Pros: The property was right by the marina and a quick 10-minute Uber from King St. The hotel was quiet and smelled nice. The lobby was tidy and well furnished. I was pleased at the space to grab a table and hang in the lobby with my laptop. Beds were comfy and the linens were spotless. All of the doors had proper locks and worked correctly. We appreciated that they had the air on prior to our arrival (in early November its still warm here in SC). Would stay again with the pups. Given the ridiculous price of hotels directly on the peninsula, I felt like I got my money's worth. In addition, the grounds were well lit. I would feel safe staying at this hotel alone with the dogs. Walking with my partner, I had zero concerns about walking the pups at dark.
- CathyNov 11, 2021Terrible
The guy at the counter was rude and talked badly about other customers. The room smelled and they refused to have housekeeping come and clean our rooms. We had to get sheets and change them ourselves. The breakfast was gross.
- SusieNov 9, 2021Really accommodating!
Very comfortable spot for us all.
- GregoryNov 9, 2021Great location!
Convenient for pups!
- TommyOct 22, 2021Great location
Had a great stay here 10/21, very nice and clean rooms. The staff was very friendly with our dogs. I would definitely stay here again.
- CiciOct 13, 2021Nice stay
Pooch had nice stay at pet friendly hotel. Area not conducive to long walks due to location but nice clean dog friendly hotel.
- PamelaOct 2, 2021Moldy smell
Front desk staff friendly and helpful however room smelled like mold. Bathroom very run down and felt dirty. Would not stay again.
- CorinneSep 24, 2021Very Friendly
The stay was fine although there weren’t as many places to walk my dogs as I’d have liked. The hotel needs a little updating but for a few nights it was worth the price.
- MelanieSep 13, 2021Very dog friendly in good location
Clean room and hotel. Good location. Very dog friendly and affordable without the excessive fees some charge to bring your furry family member.
- CarlynAug 29, 2021Good!
I was expecting less based on some of the reviews. We had a king size bed room on the 4th floor. It was pretty good! Bed was comfy. Bathroom is nothing special, but as expected (bathroom lights are too bright). Pups had plenty of room and we were very happy! It's in a nice location - next to a marina - so that was good too! Plenty of good dog walking areas around the hotel. Guests were all very dog friendly.
- ElizabethAug 5, 2021Too many smokers around the grounds
Very uncomfortable beds and the carpet was wet when we got there and was still wet the following morning.
- PatriciaAug 2, 2021Great location
Only gave this a 3 bones because it wasn't cleaned properly. The shower had last guest bar of soap in holder. Ice machine on our floor didn't work. But overall for pet friendly was okay.
- LorenJul 6, 2021Great space, clean, good price
Happy dog.
- AimeeJun 28, 2021It was okay
Rooms were okay not great or very comfortable. The dog areas weren’t great and not the nicest grounds.
- EddieJun 22, 2021Good location
The hotel is at a good location but the pool was closed and breakfast was a bag with a muffin & a cup of fruit. We also had problems with the shower. Other than that it was good.
- VanessaJun 19, 2021Super pet friendly
It was a wonderful stay! Stayed for a night with my fur baby and had a great time.
- JimJun 7, 2021Very Dog Friendly
We stayed three nights with Annie our Shih Tzu rescue and found the hotel very pet friendly. Unlike some hotels, however, they did not have a dog welcome package.
- PamJun 3, 2021Pets are treated as true guests
The only reason I didn’t give 5 bones was because of little things such as no shampoo provided or glass for water in the room. The main reception area needs some cosmetic improvements. However, when it came to my pup, everything was great. Clean room. Great green space for potty breaks. And the staff was great.
- KimJun 1, 2021Great location
Within 30 min of everything to do in Charleston so was very convenient to run back and check on our pup when we couldn't take her with us. Hotel was clean and right across the road from a marina. Only drawback was there is not much grass for the pups to use so it was a little hard to get mine to potty. Also the noise from the hallway could be loud so left the tv on for background noise. Windows overlooking the marina are cloudy so you couldn't really get a good view. Large parking lot between hotel and restaurant to run some energy off. Was suppose to be in room with exterior door but had to stay in main hotel and take elevator to go out. Was not a problem for my small dog but if you have an aggressive dog or one that cant hold it make sure you get a walk out room. They didn't serve breakfast but had coffee in the mornings. Charleston has a ton of dog-friendly restaurants so just plan ahead as most places had over an hour wait. Make reservations for the restaurant next door for dinner or you wont get in on a weekend night. Will be coming back soon and will definitely stay here again!
- TiffanyJun 1, 2021Very pet friendly
Overall this was a great hotel, very affordable, convenient location, and it's also next to a pet-friendly restaurant.. a lot of dogs in the hotel and several spots to take your dog for a walk outside. I did have an issue with my hotel room; I wasn't given the room that I had booked through BringFido and I'm waiting on the follow up to that concern.
- CatherineMay 31, 2021Good location
Unfortunately, the room I was in originally had a broken air conditioner that kept my daughter and husband up all night. It was a small room for the both of them and two dogs. I also went on the trip to Isle of Palms and move to the fourth floor which was much nicer. That is the reason why I gave two stars. I went to the pool to relax after a day at the beach and it was supposed to close at 10 o clock but the associate came out and stated she was closing the pool and it was only eight. I was told dogs were allowed on the first floor because they were tile floors. But when I moved to the fourth floor I could hear plenty of dogs. I much rather would have the dogs on the fourth floor. So if you go to this hotel ask for a different floor then the first
- JamesMay 11, 2021Great service
Hands down a great service. My schedule changed and they were able to accommodate.
- SuzanneMay 9, 2021Good and Bad
The good: great location with easy access to Charleston and a wonderful restaurant just down the street. The bad: the beds in our room had top sheets but no blankets or coverlets, we had only a shred of toilet tissue available (we had to ask for more), and the ice machine in our building was inoperable (we had to use the one in the next building).
- ShannonMay 3, 2021Decent place, dog friendly
There isn't a whole lot that is within walking distance of the hotel but it is a short trip from downtown.
- AshleyApr 19, 2021Awful experience
The first room(king suite) I was given had greasy hand prints all over, there were no towels and the garbage cans were in the center of the room. So requested a new room (2 queens this time) this to was filthy, the beds were torn apart and there were dirty napkins everywhere(clearly used.) So again I requested a new room(2 doubles) which was in a separate building. They had at least made an attempt to clean this room. 100% I would not go back or recommend to others. For all the hassle they did credit 50% back after I requested.
- WilliamMar 23, 2021Great Location average stay
Room had not been entirely cleaned as a used bar of soap and shampoo were in the shower. Hotel is older but recently updated so the stay was average
- BeebeMar 17, 2021Love location
Loved the location and dog friendly was a huge bonus!! Clean room and friendly staff. Will definitely stay at this location again.
- AmandaMar 1, 2021Very Dog Friendly
Lots of dogs stay here but there is no good palace for walking your dog. It’s a very old building with thin walls and our room smelled of cigarettes. I would only recommend this place if you are tight on money and have dogs.
- CharlesFeb 18, 2021Great stay
Great stay clean room well maintained all around nice experience.
- WilliamFeb 10, 2021Awesome
Great staff clean comfortable room
- MarkJan 16, 2021Just Fine
Everything was good except the WiFi didn’t work
- AftonJan 11, 2021Perfect for us
The room was very clean and didn’t smell like dog at all! The floors did get a little sandy during our stay with us and our two dogs going in and out. We heard some barking and scratching during the evening but were never woken up by anyone during the night. There isn’t a huge space at the hotel to let your pup relieve themselves but you can walk along the marina and find some grassy patches if your pup prefers to potty during a walk! We would definitely stay here again and recommend to others. Wasn’t far from downtown at all!
- BenjaminJan 2, 2021Great Location and Friendly Staff
This was our 2nd experience at a La Quinta Inn and Suites and the location and staff were wonderful.
- FrankDec 14, 2020No way
No place to walk your dog that was safe. Manager and staff were not friendly. No attempt at serving any kind of breakfast. Would not stay there again.
- AnnDec 2, 2020Convenient
The hotel was convenient to attractions, hardwood floors
- ScottNov 29, 2020Horrible Experience
I would not recommend this hotel to anyone, I strongly suggest BringFido disassociate themselves from this particular hotel in Charleston so you don’t tarnish your organization
- LoriNov 27, 2020No dog fee
Positives- no dog fee, great location
Negatives- not clean, maintenance was drilling & hammering at 8 am each day. - AshlieNov 9, 2020Great location, price and friendliness toward pets
The location is fantastic - their is access to boat slips right across the street and it's near downtown with easy access to James Island. The rooms are large and spacious and the beds were super-comfortable. The staff were very friendly and helpful. Everyone was so nice to my two dogs. And the price was awesome (only a $20 fee for my 2 dogs)! I highly recommend La Quinta in Charleston!
- LynnNov 3, 2020Great location
Clean rooms very dog friendly no breakfast due to Covid precautions
- EricOct 26, 2020Awesome place to stay
Other than the hotel being a little outdated it was a great place to stay!!
- StephanieOct 25, 2020Easy travelin’ with puppy
Rooms were conveniently located on first floor and uncarprted, so no pet odors. Located beside a harbor which made for pretty walks with our dog. Special trash receptacle for poop bags. A basic hotel, breakfast and pool were closed due to Covid.
- TammyOct 23, 2020Will stay again!’
Easy check in. Clean rooms.
- KevinOct 5, 2020Clean with great location.
We enjoyed a weekend getaway with our little schnauzer., facility was clean and located conveniently to downtown.
- AlejandroSep 21, 2020Great location
Excelent customer service
- MarisolSep 11, 2020Great place for pets
Not pet fee, very friendly
