What a relief
Holiday Inn Alexandria an IHG HotelI had originally booked in a much cheaper location down the road, but it was completely horrible--and my cat was terrified (apparently she has good taste in hotels: she doesn't like the bargain-basement ones and hides). The great folks at BringFido found me a room at the Holiday Inn, and it was like paradise by comparison. It's not high luxury, but it's very clean, very well-appointed, there's a restaurant on premises for breakfast, lunch, and dinner, and other goodies. The only down-side to the room (and I'm learning to check) was that there was a tiny tear in the fabric at the bottom of the box spring--which my cat discovered, and she climbed inside the box spring to hide when it was time to leave: she knows the signs and doesn't want to get in the carrier and back in the car. My advice in **any** place you stay, if you have a cat who might feel shy/nervous/resistant to getting in the carrier: check for hiding places--even in the nicest hotels!
Very nice
Quality Inn BismarckNice, basic hotel: clean, neat, and well maintained. I had to wedge some bedding and so on around a gap at the head of the bed around the platform base to block off a kitty hiding space, but the room was very comfortable, the staff friendly, and there were restaurants all over within easy walking distance.
nonsmoking??
Red Lion Inn & Suites MissoulaI've had the experience at a number of places now where a "nonsmoking" room still smells like cigarettes. The shower stall also needs to be replaced: it's old and stained, and the grout/caulk is mildewed. Otherwise, it's a nice hotel, and the bonus is that it's very close to downtown, easy walk to a lot of great restaurants, shops, and so on.
Not so super
Super 8 by Wyndham BillingsDecent sized room, decent amenities, no places for kitties to hide, which is a bonus--but there was cat litter on the floor from the previous guest's pet, as well as a little spilled kibble, and a huge wad of animal fur on the desk chair. In fact, the problem with the floor went beyond needing to be swept: it was a bare wood floor, but I quickly realized I was uncomfortable going barefoot: I could feel how dirty the floor was (and indeed, the bottoms of my socks were pretty filthy in the morning). The nonsmoking room also smelled faintly of smoke (which seems to be the case a lot of places). I was too tired to say anything about it when I checked in, but when I mentioned the lack of cleanliness to the front desk staff, the woman simply said, "Well, housekeeping needs to do a better job." I understand not offering a discount on the room (since I clearly put up with it overnight), but not even an apology? That seems pretty low to me.
Lovely room
La Quinta by Wyndham Madison American CenterThe room was large, spotless, and very well appointed. There was a nice, comfortable couch and easy chair with a coffee table in addition to the usual dresser and desk. The front desk staff were friendly and helpful. Lots of room in the bathroom for a big litterbox. The only reason it doesn't get five "bones" is breakfast: the food choices were ok, and people who can eat gluten probably were very happy, but styrofoam dishes and plastic utensils? Cheap and environmentally very unfriendly. The whole "green stay" thing about sheets and towels is obviously greenwashing a way for the hotel to economize. If they really cared about environmental issues, there is no way they'd use styrofoam and plastic--but it saves them money.
Great for the bucks
Hotel Veranda DuBoisThis is a very nice hotel. Not fancy, but clean and well appointed and maintained. The room was large, plenty of room in the bathroom for a litter box, and the bed deliciously comfy, with an assortment of pillows from which to choose. The only negative was the free breakfast. I suppose fir free, one shouldn't be too choosy, but the space was dingy (and doubles as a bar for events), cold cereals (none of which I could eat, as I have celiac disease), only 2% milk for the coffee, and the only food I could eat--eggs, breakfast meat, and breakfast potatoes--were greasy, and I had to ask the people who ordered before me if I could have the potatoes, since there was only one serving left (and they could have a different starch option; I couldn't). The waitress/cook was clearly over-worked: they had a sign up that they're hiring housekeeping staff, and clearly they need it, as she could have used help. Still, though. I forgive the breakfast for the comfort of the room. I could relax there (and so did my cat).
smelly, noisy
Red Roof Inn ParsippanyWhen I arrived the office was locked, and no one answered the bell. After about 5 minutes, I was trying to call (going through the ridiculous menu of options) when the clerk arrived from outside, carrying a take-out bag of food. My "nonsmoking" room smelled of smoke. Although the sheets were crisply laundered, there was a cigarette burn in one of them. There were very noisy guests outside in the parking lot until 2 a.m. (I grant, I didn't call the management to ask for help in quieting them down; after my check-in experience, I was too tired to fight with getting through to anyone at the front desk.) The room did not look terribly clean, and overall, it was pretty run down and ratty. Red Roof Inn usually does better, but I guess they figure, in Parsippany, why bother.
